The Board of Selectwomen of Westport has unanimously approved the installation of a permanent rainbow crosswalk in downtown Westport. This landmark decision, made during today’s meeting, highlights the town’s commitment to inclusivity and support for the LGBTQ+ community.

First Selectwoman Jen Tooker and Third Selectwoman Candice Savin, members of the Board of Selectwomen, were present during the meeting, while Second Selectwoman Andrea Moore was unable to attend due to travel commitments. Despite the absence, the unanimous approval underscores the unity and shared vision of the Board.

The approved permanent crosswalk, located at the intersection of Jesup Road and Taylor Place, will be funded entirely by donations, eliminating the need for taxpayer dollars. The Town of Westport will take responsibility for the care and maintenance of the crosswalk going forward. The material used in the installation is thermally fused to the asphalt, ensuring potential durability for up to 10 years, as stated by Peter Ratkiewich, Director of Public Works. The anticipated costs for future maintenance and repairs are in line with those of other crosswalks in the town. The materials have been used previously on Main Street as well as by Norwalk for their rainbow crosswalk.

Brian McGunagle, Founder of Westport Pride, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The design of the crosswalk will draw inspiration from the historic Gilbert Baker Pride Flag and the more recent Daniel Quasar Progress Pride Flag. By combining elements of both designs, the crosswalk will represent the full spectrum of the LGBTQ+ community.” The design will feature two white bars running the length of the crosswalk, with colored panels inset between the white lines. This design meets the latest safety regulations and aligns with other newly installed crosswalks in town, such as those seen on Main Street.

Preparation of the crosswalk design for bids will commence in the coming days, followed by the establishment of a timeline for installation based on material availability and contractor timetables. Meanwhile, the current temporary crosswalk will be removed as it is reaching the end of its useful life and may pose safety concerns due to peeling from the asphalt surface.

The temporary crosswalk, approved unanimously during the Board’s May 24th meeting, was initially planned to be in place for the month of June only. However, due to overwhelming public support through efforts led by Dr. Nikki Gorman, the sponsor of the current installation, the Town’s approval gained significant traction. Dr. Gorman’s change.org petition has amassed over 1,100 signatures in the past two weeks, urging the Board to retain the crosswalk beyond its initial duration.

This permanent rainbow crosswalk represents Westport’s dedication to fostering an inclusive and vibrant community. It stands as a symbol of unity, equality, and celebration of diversity for all residents and visitors alike.
