The Westport Woman’s Club this week donated a brand-new, fully equipped ambulance to the Westport Volunteer Emergency Medical Service, marking one of the largest charitable contributions to the agency in recent years.
The custom-built vehicle — nicknamed “Lea” — was funded through a $150,000 gift to the club from the Lea Ruegg Foundation, with the Westport Woman’s Club contributing additional funds to complete the nearly $500,000 purchase. The ambulance has been in development for three years, from initial design through construction.
“After three years of design and building, this custom ambulance will replace one of our 10-plus-year-old current ambulances and will go on to save thousands of lives over its lifetime,” said James Bairaktaris, president of the Westport Volunteer EMS. “We’re blessed to have the Westport Woman’s Club as both our neighbors and supporters, and so, too, all of our EMTs and the patients we’ll help.”
The new vehicle expands the agency’s ability to respond to emergencies and supports its volunteer EMTs, who serve Westport and surrounding communities year-round.
