The Westport Book Shop is featuring local artist John Bygott as its guest exhibitor for the month of June. Visitors can view a selection of his oil paintings of seascapes at the shop’s Drew Friedman Art Place through June 30. All artwork on display is available for purchase.

Bygott explained that his work strives to share a snapshot of his inspiration with the viewer. He noted a lifelong fascination with the horizon and the relationship between the vast sky and the earth.

Though originally from Fairfield, Bygott previously directed his own art gallery in Westport during the 1980s, where he represented regional New England artists. He has worked in or managed art galleries for more than 30 years alongside a 25-year career in interior design. He has been painting professionally for nearly 20 years.

A graduate of the Paier College of Art in New Haven, Bygott studied fine art, advertising, graphic design, and interior design. He also completed studies at the Creative Arts Workshop, The Silvermine School, and the Cape Cod Conservatory of Art and Music. His work has been represented in galleries across Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Mexico, and Florida.

A public reception for Bygott will take place at the shop on Wednesday, June 17, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Space is limited for the event. Attendees must RSVP by calling 203-349-5141 or emailing RSVP@westportbooksaleventures.org.

The exhibit is open during regular business hours at 23 Jesup Road, located across from The Westport Library. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from Noon to 5:00 p.m. The Westport Book Shop operates as a nonprofit independent used bookstore.
