Westport Country Playhouse will present “Rent Control,” a one-man comedy written and performed by Evan Zes, on Monday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m.

The play is based on Zes’s real-life experiences as an aspiring actor in New York City who lands a rent-controlled apartment on the Upper East Side. To generate income while pursuing his career, he turns the apartment into an Airbnb rental.

The scheme eventually backfires, entangling him with internet scammers and low-level gangsters. Throughout the performance, Zes portrays 25 distinct characters in what he describes as a story of survival and redemption.

The show debuted at the 2016 New York International Fringe Festival and continued with the 2016 Fringe Encore Series at SoHo Playhouse, selling out both runs. Zes has also performed the show internationally in Greece and Costa Rica.

Zes has previously appeared at Westport Country Playhouse in “The 39 Steps,” “Around the World in 80 Days,” “Sorry for Laughing,” and several reading series. His broader credits include Broadway’s “The Kite Runner” and television roles in “Only Murders in the Building” and “The Blacklist.”

Tickets for the 90-minute performance cost $25, $35, and $45, and the show will run without an intermission.
