Comedian and playwright Lewis Black’s comedy “One Slight Hitch” will take the stage at Westport Country Playhouse for a one-night-only Script in Hand playreading on Monday, May 4, at 7 p.m.
The play, directed by Kevin O’Rourke, centers on the chaotic events of a wedding day in Ohio during the 1980s. When an uninvited guest from the bride’s past appears, the family’s attempt at a perfect celebration quickly descends into a farce involving rising tensions and spilled secrets.
Black noted that the idea for the play began when he wondered what would happen if someone from the past showed up on a day that was supposed to be completely planned out.
“He’s a remarkably funny playwright, and ‘One Slight Hitch’ proves it,” said Mark Shanahan, Playhouse artistic director. “Get ready for an evening of rollicking laughter and just the right touch of heartfelt truth.”
Black’s career spans stand-up, film, and television, including appearances on “The Big Bang Theory” and the film “Accepted,” as well as authoring three New York Times best sellers.
The Script in Hand 2026 season will continue with additional readings scheduled for June 8, Sept. 14, Oct. 5, and Nov. 30. Single tickets for the May 4 reading are priced at $35, and subscriptions for the remainder of the series are also available.
