The application deadline is approaching for talented young pianists looking to compete on a global stage. The Museum of Contemporary Art Connecticut, located in Westport, announced that applications for the 2026 Heida Hermanns International Music Competition must be submitted by June 30, 2026.
The competition is open to pianists between the ages of 18 and 30. It serves as a career springboard for young artists preparing to transition to international performances. The first-place winner receives a $20,000 grand prize and a solo recital engagement at the Westport museum. Second place receives $10,000, and third place receives $5,000.
Finalists chosen for the event will receive complimentary lodging, meals, and an individual practice piano during their stay in Connecticut.
The evaluation process focuses on more than technical skills. Judges look for contestants who can program creatively, connect with live audiences, and navigate the entrepreneurial demands of a modern classical music career. Finalists will also face the challenge of premiering a newly commissioned work before a live audience in Westport.
Past winners have used the Westport event to launch major international achievements. Carter Johnson, the 2024 winner, became the first Canadian finalist in the history of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The 2025 co-grand prize winner, Zhu Wang, recently won the 71st Maria Canals International Piano Competition in Barcelona.
The preliminary round of the competition is conducted entirely online through video submissions on SlideRoom. Musicians who have applied in past years but were not selected as finalists are encouraged to submit an application again.
The museum will announce the selected finalists on August 15, 2026. The final round of live solo performances and the awards ceremony will take place at the museum in Westport on November 14, 2026.
