Westport Country Playhouse has opened registration for “Stand Up & Learn™,” a stand-up comedy program designed for children ages 12 through 16. The curriculum focuses on teaching young students how to write comedic stories and bits.
The workshop takes place Monday through Thursday, August 3 through August 6, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Class size is capped at a maximum of 12 participants, and the program concludes with a private performance for family and friends on August 6 at 5 p.m.
Developed as the first stand-up comedy initiative for school-aged children, the program utilizes lessons with video and interactive worksheets. The instruction engages students in creative writing, communication, critical thinking, team building, and confidence building.
The program fee is $295, which covers all four two-hour classes, course materials, and complimentary tickets to the concluding performance. Financial scholarships are available for families who qualify.
Comedian, actor, writer, host, and producer Kevin Flynn serves as the founder and director of “Stand Up & Learn™.” A former professional soccer player, Flynn transitioned to stand-up comedy by winning the Boston Comedy Riot and currently serves as the founder and executive director of the Nantucket Comedy Festival.
Flynn’s screen credits include “The Heartbreak Kid,” “Me, Myself and Irene,” “Osmosis Jones,” “The World’s Greatest Beer Run,” and HBO’s “Sex and the City.” He previously hosted The Discovery Channel’s outdoor adventure show “Go for It,” which led to his award-winning one-man show “The Go for It Guy,” and is currently on a national tour with his solo show “Fear of Heights—A Very Funny Phobia.”
