I am incredibly excited to officially roll out our new town-specific lineup. When I launched Finding Westport back in 2018, my goal was to find the unique features that Westport has and bring them to light. This new merchandise collection does exactly that, blending local pride with iconic design concepts inspired by the “I Love NY” logo and Robert Indiana’s famous “LOVE” statue.
Rather than just copying those classic emblems, I used them as a creative jumping-off point. This project has been brewing for a few years, and I finally had the chance to bring it to life, combining clean typography, high school sports colors, and a nod to old-school formatting.
I Heart Westport
This layout takes direct inspiration from the “I Love NY” aesthetic but stretches it out into a single, clean typographic statement: “I ❤️ Westport.” If the lettering looks familiar, that’s because it features the American Typewriter font. I’ve used this specific typeface across our social media pages for the last eight years because it perfectly fits our mission of storytelling and sharing the good things happening right here in town.
Westport Vision
For this piece, the goal was to create a bold, structural graphic that completely commands the design space vertically. I experimented with different column configurations, but anything standard felt too short or empty. I landed on a thick, bold layout using classic black and white colors. When the text came together, it naturally mirrored the look of a classic eye chart, which inspired the “Vision” name.
41 Tilt Westport
Robert Indiana’s pop-art “LOVE” sculpture heavily influenced this design. The text is grouped tightly together so the letters physically interact, set in our local team colors with a vibrant red accent letter. Instead of copying the original sculpture’s 45-degree angle, I tilted our accent letter at exactly 41 degrees, a hidden easter egg honoring Connecticut’s latitude line. Because “Westport” doesn’t have an “O,” the challenge was selecting and tilting a letter that captures the defining phonetic sound of the town’s name.
Love Westport
If you prefer a stacked layout, this two-line design physically swaps out the “O” in the word “love” with a graphic heart symbol, with “Westport” anchoring the design directly underneath.
Westport Love
This design officially introduces the four-letter WSPT format to the merchandise lineup, blending modern typography with a deep nod to local history. The layout features the bold “WSPT” lettering in blue, accented by a red heart graphic. The true anchor of the piece is the background, which is intricately composed of Westport street names. My thought process here was to literally weave the roads, neighborhoods, and geography that define Westport directly into the fabric of the design.
Both the I Heart Westport and Westport Vision graphics were specifically created with a vintage aesthetic in mind, making them the perfect match if you’re a fan of a classic ringer tee.
